The important thing to understand for the non-Android, non-Mac users out there, is that Android File Transfer (AFT) works like shit.
Google has only updated the app three times, ever, to keep it working with newer versions of macOS. See, when Android phones transitioned from connecting to computers via “mass storage,” where the phone just looks like a drive, to MTP, Google made this work with a utility called Android File Transfer. You would think that Google, the company behind the ascension of Android, would have an interest in making it easy to use an Android phone with a Mac, and you’d be wrong. Apple, nearly a decade later, is still too petty to natively support MTP, Android’s file transfer protocol. If you have a Mac and an Android device, you know that transferring files between them is a total nightmare. Give Android File Transfer a go and see if it doesn’t make your hybrid mobile life a bit easier.Update ( 2:09 PM ET): We've updated the story to include some responses to questions we sent Rathinavel via email. And that, my friends, is the only hiccup to this one trick pony of an app that makes transferring files to and/or from Android incredibly easy. That’s really not a problem, as most macOS users default to drag and drop over copy/paste. To transfer files, your only option is drag and drop. With this app, there is no cut and paste. Once you’re done transferring files, click Android File Transfer | Quit Android File Transfer. Open a Finder window, navigate to the files you want to transfer to your Android device (or to where you want to save files from your Android device) and start dragging and dropping. The app will open to display your Android root directory ( Figure B). Go back to your Mac and open the Android File Transfer app (from Applications). Tap USB and then (when prompted) tap to select Transfer files ( Figure A). On your Android device, open Settings and then go to Connected devices. There is only one configuration to take care of. Once it’s downloaded, double-click the file and then (when prompted) drag the file to Applications. The only installation is on the macOS side. The process will work with any Android device, so long as it’s running Android 5.0 and higher and your laptop or desktop is running macOS version 10.7 and higher.
